FIELD TRIP

On a quiet snowy Sunday in Ottawa’s Greenbelt, I met these Ojibwe Spirit Horses — small, strong, and carrying centuries of story in their steady presence.

These rare horses, also known as the Lac La Croix Indigenous Pony, were once nearly lost. Bred by Anishinaabe communities for endurance and intelligence, they survived brutal winters, worked traplines, and travelled frozen lakes alongside their families. Their thick winter coats and compact builds feel perfectly designed for days like this — snow drifting softly across their backs.

I photographed them at Mādahòkì Farm, a beautiful Indigenous-led space where land, culture, and the Ojibwe Spirit Horses are protected and shared. Thank you to Michelle Remillard for organizing this visit.
